Over a million Muslim pilgrims gathered in Mecca for the start of the hajj pilgrimage amid the backdrop of the Gaza conflict and scorching summer temperatures. Despite the solemn atmosphere, worshippers expressed sorrow over the ongoing war, with many calling for prayers to end the suffering in Palestine.

The conflict, initiated by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

The militants also seized 251 hostages. Of these, 116 remain in Gaza although the army says 41 of them are dead.

Israel in response has carried out a military offensive in Gaza that has left at least 37,232 people dead, also mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory.

Saudi Arabia, in a gesture of solidarity, welcomed 1,000 pilgrims from Gaza, bringing the total number of Palestinian pilgrims to 2,000.

However, Saudi authorities have emphasized that political activities will not be allowed during the pilgrimage, leaving pilgrims uncertain about how to express their support for Palestine.

The hajj, a fundamental pillar of Islam, involves several days of rituals in and around Mecca. Pilgrims, dressed in white garments, perform rituals such as circling the Kaaba and prayers on Mount Arafat.

Despite the challenges, including extreme heat, pilgrims feel privileged to participate in this sacred journey. Last year’s hajj saw over 1.8 million pilgrims, and this year, approximately 1.5 million have already arrived.

To mitigate the risks of heat-related illnesses, authorities have implemented measures such as misting systems and heat-reflective coverings. Pilgrims are advised to stay hydrated and take precautions against the high temperatures, which could reach up to 48 degrees Celsius.

Overall, despite the somber backdrop of the Gaza conflict and the challenges posed by the weather, pilgrims remain committed to fulfilling their religious obligations during the hajj pilgrimage.
